First Edition. 8vo. Original Green Decorated Cloth. xii, 13 - 371 pp., Preface, One Plate, Large Folding Map. Howes P89 says, "Parker accompanied a fur-trading party, in 1835, from Council Bluffs to Walla Walla." Graff 3192 says, "The map is the earliest map of the Oregon interior with a pretense to accuracy." Also the book contains a vocabulary of the Nez Perce language, as well as those of other tribes. The Reverend Samuel Parker accompanied Dr. Marcus Whitman and the American Fur Company exploring party of 1835. He returned home via the Hawaiian Islands the following year. This book presents Parker's observations and his account of the trip. Much on the various Indian tribes that he encountered. The journal chronicles their encounters with various Native American tribes, their struggles with harsh weather and terrain, and their observations of the flora and fauna of the region. Parker's account provides valuable insights into the history and culture of the American West during this time period, as well as a glimpse into the life of a missionary and explorer. Previous owner's name at upper edge of title page and small stamp in upper fore-corner of front free-endpaper. Some light, occasional wear to edges, corners, and spine ends. Light foxing throughout. Map has a couple of short tears where attached to binding, short splits at two folds, and a short, narrow area with a light damp stain on left portion of map. In all, a very good copy of a work that is rarely encountered in its original binding!
