James Clyman was with Jed Smith and Tom Fitzpatrick when they rediscovered South Pass in 1824, but quit the mountains in 1827. In 1844 he went to Oregon with a wagon train of immigrants, finally settling in California in 1848."---Camille E. Cazedessus II. "One of the most trustworthy narratives of the far west, for the period 1842-6; the only Oregon overland journal in 1844."--Howes C83. " One of the richest sources of early western history. The author was one of the first white men to traverse South Pass and, in 1826, to circumnavigate Great Salt Lake. His diaries, which cover the years 1844-47, describe his adventures on the Oregon and the Oregon-California Trails, including the time he spent in San Francisco in 1845. In 1848 he settled permanently in California, where he died at his Napa ranch in 1881."--Howell, Cat. 50-II-380. We have in Clyman the only account, by a participant, of the white-man's first positively recorded and documented entry into the Black Hills."--Jennewein 3. "Another wonderful account of the fur trade published in the 20th century, edited by Charles Camp, is James Clyman, American Frontiersman...Clyman's diaries, while crudely written, are more expressive of the adventures of the mountain men than many better composed works."--Bill Reese, Best Of The West,p.265. A bright, attractive copy, with a small smudge on lower part of front cover, and some very slight wear to spine ends and corners. Previous owner's name neatly written on front endpaper, else near fine.
