Captain Bourke enjoyed a very illustrious career in the U.S. Army, most of which was spent campaigning with General George Crook in Arizona and Mexico, as well as the Northern Plains. He served as Crook's aide-de-camp and acting assistant adjutant-general of troops in multiple times and locations. Bourke also served in the Nez Perce campaign and in Colorado after the Meeker Massacre by Ute Indians in 1879. Bourke was a scholarly man of many interests authoring several works including 3 major classics of the Indian Wars: An Apache Campaign In The Sierra Madre; On The Border With Crook: and Mackenzie's Last Fight With The Cheyennes.
