Original dark green, blind-stamped cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, all page edges are marbled, original patterned front and rear endpapers, 607 pp., introduction, frontispiece (portrait of H. B. Cushman), a wonderful section on North American Indian names. An indispensable source volume, the author lived among these tribes from 1820-1890. Cushman was raised among the Indians and had personal knowledge of their great men, habits, history, & beliefs. Eberstadt says "The author's parents, Calvin and Laura Cushman, began their missionary life among the Choctaw as early as 1820. The author was reared among the Indians, and spent his life in acquiring knowledge of them through personal contact and first hand study. His intimate knowledge of their great men, history, habits, beliefs and aspirations is amazing." All page edges uniformly browned else a near fine, bright, tight copy of this very scarce to rare title.
