The nephew of the famous Alexander Henry, who traveled through the "Indian Territories" of Canada from 1760-1776; Alexander Henry, the Younger began trading with the Saulteaux Indians in 1792. He spent his first season in the Northwest in 1799-1800, at a winter post of the Northwest Company near the foot of Fort Dauphin Mountain, west of Lake Manitoba. From there he went to Grand Portage, the annual meeting place on Lake Superior. In the latter part of July he started on his return to Red River. The portion of Henry's journal presented here records his trip from Grand Portage to Red River during the period of July, 1800, to June, 1801. An important firsthand account of Henry's fur trading activity. A fine copy of this fragile work.
