Charles Bessey was a noted Professor of Botany who created the first undergraduate botanical laboratory in the United States. In 1884 he became Dean of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska and initiated a tree planting experiment that resulted in the Nebraska National Forest, the first man made national forest in the world.
