First edition. 8vo. Limited edition of 300 copies bound in quarter sheepskin and natural hopsacking, ram's head in brown on front cover, titles on a small paper spine label, signed by the author and the printer, Carl Hertzog. This is copy number 252. Pictorial hopsacking with sheepskin spine, yellowish/orange endsheets, colored top edges, xv [5], 226 pp., preface, illustrated, maps, appendices, bibliography, index, One illustration preceding the frontispiece by Jose Cisneros. Thoroughly researched work tracing the development of ranching in south Texas, with special emphasis on the often overlooked sheep-raising activity. Due to severe problems with overgrazing, many ranches eventually changed from sheep to cattle ranching. The Farias Ranch, Bar S Ranch, Case Ranch, Bunce Ranch, and the Callaghan Ranch are among the many recorded in this book. An excellent work, further enhanced by excerpts from letters of Walter Meek, an early resident on the sheep-raising frontier. Fine, without dust jacket, as issued, housed in a cloth slipcase with titles on a paper label on spine.
