Publication: The Southwestern Historical Quarterly, 1946 & 1947, Austin, 1946, 1947

Emory's 1844 Texas is a good example of a map that both reflected events of history as well as helped shape them. The map was part of the annexation treaty between the United States and Texas and was the first map produced by the U.S. government recognizing Texas' boundary claims as Texas defined them in December 1836. Map appears in the SWHQ, Volume L, No. 2, October, 1946, Volume L, No. 3, January, 1947 and Volume L, No.4, April, 1947. Each issue with large folding maps of Emory's 1844 Map of Texas; 1st half and 2nd half of the reproduction of a copy of the Emory map of Texas which was transmitted by President John Tyler to the U.S. Senate in 1844 when the annexation of Texas was being considered. Of particular interest to the state boundary line along the Nueces River. Other articles of interest in the individual issues are: Early Days in Milam County: the Reminiscences of Susan Turnham McCown edited by L. W. Kemp; The Czechs in Texas by Henry R. Maresh; Four Texas Publishers by Fletcher; The Apache Indians in Texas by Frank Reeve; First half of the large folding Map of Texas and the Countries Adjacent compiled for the State Dept. under the direction of J. Abert by W. H. Emory, War Depart., 1844. Plus the 2nd half of folding map (with Texas in red extending into Colorado); Lizzie E. Johnson: A Cattle Queen of Texas; Colonizing Projects in Texas South of the Nueces, 1820-1845 (with reproduction of Austin's map) by LeRoy Graf; Geographic Notes on Spanish Texas El Orcoquisac and Los Horconsitos by Harbert Davenport and includes map of El Atascosito (Wood's Springs); and Liberty to Anahuac with other land marks along Rio de la Trinidad to Turtle Bay Union Sentiment in Texas 1861 -1865; The Kerrville Cedar Axe (illustrated plate) by Gene Hollon; Index to the entire volume and much else of importance and interest. The three volume set is in near fine to fine condition with the maps and interior in fine, unused condition. The set consists of three volumes.
