The letter is an encouraging one advising a prospective author that "and while this particular story is not for EQMM, I do encourage to keep writing." The letter is signed as "Fred Dannay ("E. Q.")." Twenty short stories provided by Cornell Woolrich, Stanley Ellin, Dorothy Salisbury Davis, John Dickson Carr, Ring Lardner, Charlotte Armstrong, Margaret Millar, Patricia Highsmith, Margery Allingham, Joe Gores, et al. Ring Lardner's story "Stop Me -- If You've Heard This One" is the first book appearance of this tale. Patricia Highsmith's "The Terrapin" was judged to be the second best mystery short story of 1962.
