Publication: Ben C Jones & Co, Printers, 1900, Austin
First Edition. Thick 8vo. Dark Blue Cloth, with title and author in gilt on label on spine. Decorated front and rear endpapers, viii, 844 pp., Preface, Frontispiece, Illustrated, Plates, Portraits. Basic Texas Books 193 says "The work contains 132 accounts of early pioneers, mostly as told by them directly to Sowell ... Most of the work, however, relates to Indian fights and Texas Rangers. This material is fresh and for the most part not repeated in Brown, Wilbarger, or other works ...The book was printed by the Austin firm of Ben C. Jones, and most copies of the original edition were destroyed in that firm's disastrous fire a few years after publication." Howes S 797 says "Nearly all copies were destroyed or damaged by fire." Some very light wear to edges and corners, rubbing to back panel. Upper fore-corner missing from a couple of pages, not affecting text. An uncommonly clean, tight copy of a Texas rarity. Very good-near fine. From the library of author, Zane Grey, with his blind stamp imprint at the top of the first page of text.
