Publication: Wichita Eagle Press, 1913, Wichita, Kansas
First edition. 8vo. Cloth, 344 pp., frontispiece, [in color], preface, introduction, illustrated, plates, portraits. An unusual binding with titles and recipient's name stamped in gilt on the front cover, all edges beveled. The recipient's name is C. L. Mitchell. Presentation inscription on the recto of the color frontispiece by the author: "With the compliments of the author to my friend C. L. Mitchell as an acknowledgement and remembrance of his many kind words of encouragement whilst getting the book out. R. M. Wright, Dodge City, Kans., Oct 16, 1913." Six Score 118 says, "It is supposed that most of this edition was destroyed by fire. The second issue does not have the colored frontispiece. There is much on Dodge City as a cowtown, and on ranching in the area as well as the trail driving phase." Adams 150 149 says, "This book, one of the first written about Dodge City, reveals intimate knowledge of the gunmen of that wild cowtown." Graff 4756 says, "This book has the real savor of Western Frontier Days." New front and rear endpapers and new spine laid-down by a paper conservator, else a fine, bright, square copy of an elusive book and a desirable copy. Perhaps especially bound by the publisher for the recipient, C. L. Mitchell. This is our first copy bound like this one.
