Large Folding Map. 21.25" x 45". "Compiled and Prepared by Robt. H. Fletcher, 1st Lieutenant 21st Infantry. U.S.A. Chief Sig. Off. & Actg. A.D.C.". House of Representatives. 45th Congress, 2nd Session. Ex. Doc. No.1, part 2.An excellent detailed map covering a very large area: eastern-most is Omaha, Nebraska and the map stretches to the Pacific Ocean including all of Washington Territory and Oregon, and the northern third of California. The north extends into Canada and the southern edge includes the Great Salt Lake and Omaha. Features of the map include natural features: lakes, rivers, creeks, mountains, etc. Also included are forts, military posts, trails taken by the Nez Perce, trails taken by various military groups, railroads, towns, international and state/territorial boundaries, and the sites of every battle or skirmish. There are 7 vignettes across the bottom portion of the map showing views of the battlefields and a inset map detailing the scene of the initial outbreak southeast of Lewiston. The Nez Perce befriended Lewis and Clark in 1805 and for 70 years remained peaceful cooperative traders with their new white neighbors. In return they were cheated, shot, and robbed of their land until 1877 when a small band rose up and attempted to fight their way to Canada. The Nez Perce War consisted of four principal engagements in which the Indians fought a remarkable defensive action, all the while badly outnumbered and under supplied, and while traveling with a large number of noncombatants. Issued by the Secretary of War. A few very short splits at a few folds, else a fine copy.
