First edition. Fine, bright, square copy in dust jacket. Death decides to take a holiday from his usual business to see what it is like to be a mortal. Posing as a prince, he spends three days with a nobleman and his guests at the nobleman's estate. Several of the women are attracted to the mysterious prince, but shy away from him when they sense his true nature. But a beautiful young woman whom the nobleman thought was to marry his son, falls in love with the prince even when she learns his real identity. This book is based on a play of the same title by Alberto Casella. In 1934, DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY was made into a movie film directed by Mitchell Leisen. It starred Frederic March as Prince Sirki/Death, Evelyn Venable, Guy Standing, and others. In 1998, the play was reissued using the title MEET JOE BLACK. The story line is somewhat different from the 1934 production, but the spirit of the play is preserved. The 1998 film was directed by Martin Brest, with Ron Osborn and Jeff Reno as screenwriters, and starred Brad Pitt as Joe Black/Death, Anthony Hopkins, Claire Forlani, Marcia Gay Harden, and others. Walter Ferris provided the English adaptation of the play. Listed in Hubin as Ferris's only mystery novel, this is an exceptional copy of a great story.
