Publication: J B Lippincott Company, 1936, Philadelphia
First U. S. edition. Cloth lightly soiled along fore-edges, small water stain to edge of rear pastedown sheet, else very good, bright copy in a lightly restored dust jacket. Meg O’Hara grew up wanting for nothing, under the care of her uncle Professor Postlethwaite. Then she married Robin O’Hara: a brave man, a secret agent, a cruel husband. On the verge of asking for a divorce, Robin disappears, and Meg is assured by his boss that he’s dead. If Robin is in fact dead, she can inherit whatever money he had, she can find out what’s in the secret package he’d left at his bank, and she can return to live with her uncle. Unfortunately, every time Meg prepares to have Robin declared dead, a mysterious message appears…strips of paper on her floor spelling out “I AM ALIVE,” a leaf with holes pricked through it spelling out “alive,” etc. Is Robin O’Hara alive or dead?
