Publication: D F Barry, Photographer, n d (ca 1878), Superior, Wisconsin
An 8" x 10" photograph matted to a size of 11" x 12 1/2" of the Standing Rock Agency with a 1 1/2" x 2" inset photograph in the upper right corner of Captain George Yates. George Wilhelmus Mancius Yates (February 26, 1843 – June 25, 1876) was an officer in the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment. He was killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Fort Yates in the Dakota Territory was named in his memory and honor, as well as Battery Yates at Fort Baker in Marin County, California, overlooking San Francisco Bay. The Standing Rock Agency was established at Fort Yates in 1873. Both the lower mat and the photograph are stamped with Barry's name in order to ensure that he received full credit for its use. On the back of the cover are the penciled words "Capt Yates Trader Store X at Standing Rock, DAK," and D. F. Barry's address label. Very good.
