First edition. 8vo. Laid-in is a typed letter from the Office of the President of South Dakota State School of Mines dated January 3, 1930, to R. S. Ellison, Chairman of the Historical Landmark Commission in Casper, Wyoming. He offers a complimentary copy of this title with the compliments of C. C. O'harra. Printed wrappers, 221 - 304 [16] pp., introductory, illustrated, plates, portraits, maps, advertisements. Both stories found in The Black Hills Engineer, Vol. XVII, No. 4., November, 1929. Two excellent articles by C. C. O'Harra, President South Dakota School of Mines. The Custer article provides an insight of the events of Custer's march into the Black Hills as gleaned from official reports, newspaper correspondence, letters, and miscellaneous communications. The objective was to learn something of the nature of the country and its strategic importance in connection with the settling of the growing conflicts between the whites and Indians. The discovery of gold is a general report of the conditions surrounding the discovery of gold, with a review of the information concerning the time and place where gold was discovered and by whom the discovery was made, together with pictures bearing on the subject. The photographs taken by W. H. Illingworth for the article on Custer are remarkable. Fine copy of two excellent articles.
