Publication: Government Printing Office, 1845, Washington
First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth binder, 31 - 206 pp. First portion from page 31 - 137 deals with much correspondence with President James Buchanan and annexing Texas into the United States. Donelson urged annexation; however, there were many concerns ... the extension of slavery; possible war with Mexico; the fear of Mexico losing other northern territories if they were to give up Texas. The second portion from page 138 - 296 deals with correspondence with the British minister in relation to Oregon and the disputed boundary between Great Britain and the United States. British Minister to Washington Richard Pakenham was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the Oregon Treaty of 1846, which settled the boundary dispute between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty established the 49th parallel as the boundary between the two countries, with the exception of Vancouver Island, which remained British. Fine copy.
