Publication: Arizona Pioneers Historical Society, 1949, Tucson
First edition. Tall quarto. Limited to 300 copies numbered and signed by the editor. This is copy 22. Quarter leather and decorated cloth, xii [1], 120 [3] pp., frontis., [An Unidentified Military Post], introduction, plates, index, folding map. In the introduction we find the following explanation, "The Du Bois diary deals with the three major western episodes in which he took part; the Gila-Apache campaign of 1857, in which as 2nd lieutenant he led Company "K" into the field of battle; the Utah War of 1858; and the Navajo campaigns of 1859. Each of these is a chapter of consequence in the history of the West; each required a year or more in planning and execution; and each cost the government heavily. Du Bois narrative is fresh and vigorous and full of those human qualities and descriptions that are lacking in official reports. He deals with daily occurrences, not with historical background or perspective. He wrote for personal amusement and satisfaction, about things he saw or experienced, without consultation with the clique of higher officers. To understand his diary better, this introduction sketches briefly the historical setting for the above campaigns." Fine, bright, copy in original unprinted paper dust jacket that has moderate wear and some loss from chipping to spine ends. An attractive production, printed by the Grabhorn Press.
