Hughes was considered by many to be among the greatest Ranger commanders of all time. His early Ranger years were served in south Texas along the Mexican border. "The author tells about the killing of John Wesley Hardin by John Selman, the killing of Bass Outlaw, and the lynching of Jim Miller.
