Publication: Photograph taken in 1925, Altadena, California
8" x 10" black & white photograph boldly inscribed in black ink on upper front corner.: "To my friend Orie Robertson / Chas. A. Siringo / Altadena, Calif. / 1927." The subjects in the photograph are identified in the lower left corner.as "Wm. S. Hart and Chas. A. Siringo in 'Tumbleweeds." Also signed on verso "An original O. O. R. on location in Tumbleweeds." Photograph is inscribed by legendary Western Americana author, lawman, Texas Ranger, bounty hunter and former Pinkerton agent Charles Siringo (1855-1928). As an agent for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency he served them well but it ended with bitter lawsuits between the the two parties. Siringo also was noted for as being the author of several books including "A Texas Cowboy," "A Cowboy Detective," "Riata and Spurs," and others. William S. Hart (1870-1946) became a stage actor at about 17 and during 20 years in the theater appeared in Shakespearean and classical roles. His motion picture career began in 1914 with two-reel films; from 1915 to 1925 he was perhaps the most popular western star, his final major picture being "Tunbleweeds," in 1925. According to the IMDB page, "Robertson started his career acting in the Grand Opera House in Los Angeles in 1908 and moved into films in 1920 playing cowboys and serving as a stuntman. He served in the Remount Service during World War I and was a member of the Hollywood Masonic Lodge and the Chuck Wagon Trailers." In this instance it appears Robertson was a set photographer for the film "Tumbleweeds." Photograph states 1927 but according to the IMDD page, the movie was filmed in 1925. A few small crease else a near fine photograph with nice contrasts. Rare as we find only a few records of signed Siringo photographs.
