The life and wisdom of Black Elk, a relative of the great Chief Crazy Horse and a member of the Ogalala Sioux nation. "The autobiography of Black Elk, who considered himself to be the spiritual representative of the earth and humankind. He told the poet John Neihardt the customs and traditions of the Sioux in order that they would recorded and preserved. Black Elk, who was twelve at the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, gives his version of the fight. Also gives the accounts of Standing Bear and Iron Hawk, as well as the death of Crazy Horse. Chapter titles include 'The Rubbing Out of Long Hair,' 'The Killing of Crazy Horse,' and 'The Butchering at Wounded Knee.'"--O'Keefe 167. Slight sunning to top edge and to small spot on spine. Previous owner's name neatly written in upper fore-corner of half-title, else a clean, tight, near fine copy in the very scarce dust jacket. Dust jacket shows wear to edges of spine, a small hole in spine, and some modest edgewear, all internally reinforced with paper tape by previous owner. A rare and exceptionally important work.
