In the spring of 1883, the U.S. Army pursued Geronimo and his band of Chiricahua Apaches into Mexico to the hidden recesses of the Sierra Madre Mountains. No Mexican or American soldiers had ever penetrated this region before. DAB praises Bourke as an accurate writer and an acute observer of Indian customs and ethnology. Bourke often made his notes in the field. He served for fourteen years under Crook in Arizona and the Southwest. Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown.
