8vo. Original pictorial gold cloth, patterned front and rear endpapers, all edges marbled, xi [blank], 13 - 556 pp., frontispiece (illustrated on both sides), preface, illustrated, plates [illustrated on both sides], woodcuts, maps, plus two folding maps. This popular work was sold only by subscription. Includes Mrs. Eli Gage's experiences of a year among the Yukon Mining Camps; Mrs. Schwatka's recollections of her husband as the Alaskan pathfinder; Prosaic side of gold hunting as seen by Joaquin Miller, the Poet of the Sierras. First edition of this excellent early handbook, and a copy of a Third edition salesman’s sample dummy for the same title after the copyright was bought out by G.W. Bertron for the Klondike gold rush. This well-illustrated work was sold originally by subscription and helped feed the gold fever of Americans seeking wealth in the Yukon and Alaska. The book warns about bogus stock companies, perils on the trail, the cost of the route, even including notes about the medicine chest which could be needed in remote Yukon gold camps, including Quinine pills, Chlorate potash, Belladonna plasters, witch Hazel, and Chloroform liniment. It does however to keep the Laudanum to 1 oz. bottles. Quite scarce to have both the complete trade edition, and salesman’s sample dummy retaining their original large folding maps of Alaska.
