Publication: D Van Nostrand, Publisher, 1883, New York
First edition. Cloth, 705 pp. + errata, 4 plates. A rare and important regimental history, it's comprised of 3 sections. The first part is "The Narrative", a history of the Fifth Cavalry from its establishment in 1855 through 1882. It chronicles their service in Texas before the Civil War; the Civil War years; the Reconstruction years in the South; service against the hostile Southern Plains tribes from 1868 through 1871; campaigns against the Apaches 1872-1875; and more lengthy service against hostile Plains Indians, from the Canadian River in Texas to the Yellowstone River in Montana, from 1875 to 1883. The second part is "Military Records of the Officers of the Fifth Regiment of Cavalry", pages 177-585, containing biographies of each officer. It also includes a biography of "Buffalo Bill" Cody, who was appointed chief scout and guide to the Fifth Cavalry by Gen. Sheridan in 1868 and 1869 in Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas. He again joined the Fifth Cavalry in Wyoming and Montana in 1876. The third part, pages 587-705, contains detailed statistics of all officers; battle records; casualty statistics; and a record of brevet commissions conferred, and recommendations for gallant and meritorious services. Previous owner was Second Lieutenant, 5th Cavalry, John M. Carson, Jr., who has signed the front free-endpaper and includes "Fort Reno, I.T., November, 1887 ", and also has his bookplate on front endpaper. Occasional minor soiling and edgewear, and slightly greater wear to spine ends and corners. Some cracking to inner hinges, but holding firm. In all, a very good copy with bright gilt imprint on front and on spine.
