First edition. 8vo. Pictorial wrappers, 24 pp., acknowledgments, illustrated. A fascinating little booklet about the people who harvest broomcorn (Broomcorn Johnnies) and the process to make into brooms. In 1797 a Massachusetts farmer named Levi Dickinson used a variety of sorghum grass, normally used for animal feed, to make a broom for his wife. The grass, which came to be known as broomcorn, proved durable and effective for sweeping. The harvesting took place in August of each year and lasted for about two weeks. Fine copy.
